Jim’s diverse legal career began at the Will County Legal Assistance in Joliet, Illinois as a legal aid where he spent five years representing persons of low-income in a wide range of legal matters — defending people who were dealing with eviction from their homes, helping obtain orders of protection for victims of domestic violence, and helping those in need receive government benefits such as food stamps, SSI, and unemployment compensation. Jim also spent a two-year period as an attorney for Utah Legal Services in Salt Lake City, where he furthered his experience in SSI and public benefits cases. His legal aid experience concluded with a five-year period as the Director of Legal Services for CARPLS (a legal aid program specializing in advice, referrals and brief services) in Chicago.
